Seminole State Foundation’s 33rd annual Dream Gala raises $360,000

Thanks to the generosity of many supporters, the Foundation for Seminole State College of Florida’s annual Dream Gala raised $360,000 for student scholarships, faculty programs and areas of greatest need at the College. The gala was held at Orlando Marriott Lake Mary on Feb. 18.

“Sky of Dreams” was the theme of the evening, a fitting name to describe how throughout its 33 years, the Dream Gala has made countless students' educational dreams come true.

“Once again, we see this great community join together in celebration to make dreams come true for so many of our students at Seminole State,” said Dr. John Gyllin, executive director of the Foundation for Seminole State. “The Dream Gala is our annual event to showcase this great College, support education and change lives. We did just that, and I am blown away by the generosity by our community partners.”

Jorge Estevez, WFTV Channel 9 news anchor, served as master of ceremonies for the event. A reception, silent auction, Italian-themed dinner, live auction and scholarship auction made it a night to remember, as did the entertainment.

DJ Lindsey Leigh and the Weldon Street Jazz Combo entertained guests throughout the evening. Leading into the scholarship auction, SeminoleSound and the Concert Chorale, presented “Rainbow,” a moving adaptation of “Over the Rainbow” uniquely sung in both Italian and English.

Another highlight of the evening came during video testimonials featuring Seminole State students and scholarship recipients Andrea Avery and Felipe Mireles. Several guests were moved to tears as they heard the students’ stories and how the generosity of the College’s donors is helping them achieve their goals. Avery is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in construction to provide a better future for her two children. Mireles, who is studying physical therapy, hopes to open his own clinic one day.

During the scholarship auction, Estevez brought Avery and Mireles on stage so the 350 guests in attendance could meet them and hear from them personally.

The 2017 Dream Gala included a prize raffle for a Whynter 28-bottle, dual-zoned wine cooler filled with premium wines. The winner was Irina Mitina. The evening’s car raffle featured a 2017 Ford Mustang Coupe Premium, donated by the Central Florida Auto Dealers Association. Seminole County Sheriff Dennis Lemma drew the ticket for the car raffle, revealing former Seminole State Trustee Chuck Kovaleski as the winner.

In its history, the Dream Gala has raised nearly $5 million in support for Seminole State.

Goodwill Celebrates Record Year Serving Central Floridians

ORLANDO, Fla. (Feb. 13, 2017) – Goodwill Industries of Central Florida marked a record year in 2016, providing 49,670 individuals with resources and training to help them find meaningful work – a 16 percent increase from 2015. Additionally, the nonprofit placed more than 8,500 Central Floridians into jobs with local employers.

New and relocated Job Connection Centers, including locations in Apopka and Daytona Beach, increased community access to Goodwill’s services. Goodwill also hosted multiple job fairs and numerous job clubs. The GoodSource Staffing Services initiative for homeless individuals also hit its stride, placing numerous people into temporary employment. Additionally, Goodwill’s youth-focused programs provided education, mentoring and job-skills training to hundreds of teens and young adults.

“The economy in 2016 was continuing to recover – and, as a result, we saw a constant stream of people looking for additional and better jobs,” said Bill Oakley, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Central Florida. “We continue to focus on equipping people with the skills and resources to find meaningful work, particularly those with barriers to employment, such as a disability, lack of work experience or limited education.”

Goodwill’s services are supported by the sales of donated items in its retail stores. Residents can donate clothing, shoes, books, household goods and electronics at their nearest retail store or Donation Xpress. A list of locations is available at www.goodwillcfl.org.

Seminole State students win multiple awards at Florida speech/debate championship

The Seminole State College of Florida Forensics Team (speech/debate) took home seven awards in the Florida College Systems Activities Association (FCSAA) Forensics Championship at Florida State College of Jacksonville on Feb. 2-4.

The team, which included students Rodrigo Alcala, Eliza Benedick, Sebastian Hernandez, Shemuwel Russ, Yithrow Russ and Meredith Slack, placed third in both Individual Events Sweepstakes and in Overall Team Sweepstakes. The team’s other awards in individual categories ranged from second to fifth place.

Intercollegiate forensics (speech/debate) consists of two classes of competition: debate and individual events, according to the FCSAA Forensics website. The debate events include Lincoln Douglas, Policy and Parliamentary. Individual events include poetry, screen plays, movie/radio scripts and platform speeches. There are also two categories of “limited preparation,” a situation where the student prepares the speech as part of the competition and is unaware of the topic until the event.

“The college’s team did an outstanding job representing our institution at the FCSAA Forensics Championship,” says Seminole State Director of Forensics Dr. Camesha Manzueta. “Each of the four students who competed in individual events won an award.”

Seminole State received additional recognition at the competition when Manzueta was named Coach of the Year for the state of Florida.

“The students and I consider it an honor and a privilege to represent our great institution, particularly within the Florida College System,” says Manzueta. “I am thankful for the great leadership of this College and the continuous support it offers to the well-rounded development of our students.”

Seminole State was one of seven FCS institutions that participated in the tournament.
