Sanford is a My Brother’s Keeper Designated Community

Sanford is a My Brother’s Keeper Designated Community
Join Us at the Fall Community Summit
Thursday, November 12, 8:00AM – 12:30PM
Sanford Civic Center, 401 E Seminole Blvd, Sanford

The Sanford City Commission endorsed the City accepting the challenge to become a “My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) designated community. The MBK initiative launched by President Barack Obama in February of 2014 is intended to address persistent opportunity gaps facing boys and young men of color to ensure all young people can reach their full potential. The MBK program supports African American and Hispanic males with certain programs that increase self-esteem, reduce disciplinary and law enforcement involvement, and boost academic performance. In some school districts the dropout rate for Black and Hispanic males is as high as 50%. In 2012, Black males were 6 times more likely to be imprisoned than White males. Also, Black, American-Indian, and Hispanic children are between six and nine times more likely than White children to live in areas of concentrated poverty

Sanford Future Claimer’s (a consortium of agencies and organizations) organized to move the MBK initiative forward in the Sanford community, developed an Action Plan to reduce disparities related to young African-Americans and Hispanic males in the Seminole High School cluster area of Sanford.

Join us on Thursday, November 12th, 2015, 8:00AM – 12:30PM, at the Sanford Civic Center, 401 E. Seminole Blvd, Sanford. Learn more about the Plan, share your thoughts, and make a commitment to get involved.

For More information and to RSVP contact Andrew Thomas, Community Relations and Neighborhood Engagement Director, City of Sanford, 407-688-5132 or Andrew.thomas@sanfordfl.gov  please visit the official My Brother’s Keeper website to learn all about the positive information surrounding this initiative https://www.whitehouse.gov/ the-press-office/2014/02/27/ fact-sheet-opportunity-all- president-obama-launches-my- brother-s-keeper-

In celebration of this milestone we bring you a great American musical, one which also celebrates the 50th anniversary of its Broadway premiere, the multiple Tony award winning "Man of La Mancha". As he faces trail in a 16th century Spanish prison, Miguel de Cervantes brings his alter ego, Don Quixote, the knight-errant de la Mancha, to life with the help of his manservant who conjures up Sancho Panza. Meanwhile, both await their fates at the hand of the Spanish Inquisition, and their fellow prisoners!

Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation gives $20,000+ to Seminole State Fire Academy

Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation gives $20,000+ to Seminole State Fire Academy

SANFORD, Fla. (Nov. 3, 2015) – The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation has awarded Seminole State College of Florida’s Center for Public Safety a $20,979 grant for six new Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) devices. The grant will provide the new air packs for future firefighters training at the Fire Academy.

“We extend a world of gratitude to the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation for their generous equipment grant,” said Jim Jollie, professor and program manager for Seminole State’s Fire Science Program. “Our goal is to give our students the best possible experience for their education and training, so when they start their careers they are well-prepared. This grant will help us to do that, enhancing our public safety program with new equipment.”

The new air pack technology, which helps firefighters to breath during smoky fire conditions, will be used by Fire Academy students who have not had any experience in the field.

Seminole State has been training Central Florida’s firefighters since 1973. The College has the only certified training center in Seminole County and one of the largest in Central Florida. The fire science programs, through the Center for Public Safety, are fully accredited by the Bureau of Fire Standards and Training (BFST) and supported by local fire departments and the Seminole County Fire Training Directors' Committee. For more information, please visit seminolestate.edu/fire.

FPL bills to decrease again in 2016 as investments in efficiency deliver continued savings for customers

FPL bills to decrease again in 2016 as investments in efficiency deliver continued savings for customers

Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) business and residential customers can expect to see a decrease in their monthly electric bills starting January 2016 following the Florida Public Service Commission’s recent approval of FPL’s request to lower electric rates. The decrease is largely the result of the company’s ongoing investments in highly efficient power generation, which continue to reduce fuel consumption, combined with savings from lower fuel prices.

Businesses can anticipate savings of about 2 to 6 percent, depending on the business customer’s rate class and type of service.

Residential customers will also see a decrease of about $2.50 a month on average in 2016 compared with current rates. FPL’s typical 1,000-kWh residential customer bill is already lower now than it was in 2006 – in addition to being the lowest in Florida and one of the lowest in the nation among reporting utilities.

Since 2001, FPL’s investments in clean generation have saved customers more than $8 billion by using less fuel to generate electricity. These efficiency savings are in addition to the savings from recent low market prices for natural gas.

The company’s fleet of efficient power plants has also enabled FPL to achieve a carbon emissions rate that is 35 percent cleaner than the U.S. utility average. In fact, while other utilities around the country are facing potentially higher costs to comply with the U.S. EPA’s Clean Power Plan, FPL is already cleaner than the goal the plan has set for Florida to reach by 2030.

A good energy plan is a good business plan. Customers can identify even more ways to save with FPL’s custom solutions to help businesses manage their electricity expenses. Visit FPL.com/savingsplan to view your Online Business Energy Dashboard and schedule a free Business Energy Evaluation.
