Seminole State College debuts redesigned Raiders logo

SANFORD, Fla. (Oct. 22, 2015) – Nearly half a century after the first Raiders Athletics teams took the field, Seminole State College of Florida is ushering in the next generation of its athletics program with a redesigned logo.

The logo, which features a sharp-eyed hawk scanning from a perched position, was created in-house by Seminole State’s design team. In addition to the navy and Carolina blue long-associated with Raiders Athletics, the logo introduces gold, which has been part of Seminole State’s branding since 1998.

“I like to think of the new look as another evolution of the Raiders,” says John Scarpino, director of athletics. “We’re enthusiastic about this next step and all the exciting ideas we have on how the College will utilize the new Raiders logo.”

Beyond Raiders Athletics, the College plans to use the new logo as a jumping-off point for fostering a broader sense of pride and camaraderie among students, alumni and staff, says Dr. Jan Lloyd, associate vice president of Student Development, who oversees athletics, intramural sports, wellness and student life.

“Our aim is to get students, alumni and Central Florida excited about Seminole State and our athletics program,” Lloyd says.

The bird of prey has been the Raiders’ visual concept, with some modifications, since the inception of the athletics program. The previous iteration had been in use since 2003. This newest design was timed to coincide with Seminole State’s 50th anniversary.

In redesigning the logo, the creative team in College Relations and Marketing relied on research and images from native Florida birds found at the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens in Sanford.

The redesigned logo was unveiled at Spirit Day on Tuesday, Oct. 20, which also celebrated the Seminole State women’s golf team, winner of the 2015 NJCAA national championship.
