Good news about Sanford crime report?

Yesterday’s Sanford Herald had a story entitled “Good news about Sanford crime report?” (http://mysanfordherald.com/view/full_story/25413221/article-Good-news-about-Sanford-crime-report-?instance=news_page).

Good news about Sanford crime report?

Sanford Herald

Good news about the crime rate in Sanford?

How can that be?

Your chances of being a victim of a violent crime in Orlando is 72 percent higher than Sanford? And 95.6 percent higher in Daytona Beach?

Are you kidding me? Everybody knows Sanford has the highest crime rate in the United States!

You are dead wrong.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issues statistics on the crime rate per 100,000 population. Their figures show murders, robberies, etc. and an overall crime rate for cities with a population of 40,000 to 250,000.

Sanford’s population places it in a category of 40,000 to 60,000.

Daytona Beach and Kissimmee are just barely in the 60,000 to 100,000 category.

Orlando is in the 100,000 to 250,000 bracket.

The latest figures reported are for the year 2012.

The crime rate on a per 100,000 basis for Sanford is 590.9.

For Kissimmee it is 905.4.

For Orlando it is 1,017.4

For Daytona Beach it is 1,155.8

So do the math residents of Sanford. You live in a low crime area compared to your larger neighbors.
